A Stressed Out High School Student Manifests Several Alcohol-Related Issues, Gets Thrown Out Of School, And Has To See The School Psychologist

Stephen was a seventeen year old high school senior who was displaying more than a few alcohol-related problems at school. Consequently, the principal explained to him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school therapist, before he would be allowed to come back to school.

Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to go over his school situation with his Mom and Dad. His Mother and Father were "relatively old-style" and told Stephen that dropping out of school was not a possible educational game plan. They informed Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would likely be like a lead weight around his feet that could conceivably inhibit his educational aspirations for the remainder of his life. In addition, Stephen's Mom and Dad were very displeased that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his peers in the second.

It was plain to see that his parents were absolutely in agreement with Stephen's principal and informed Stephen that he had better make up his mind to see Miss Pender, the school psychologist. After his conversation with his Mom and Dad, Stephen in the end agreed to see Miss Pender the next day. So Stephen phoned the school and scheduled an appointment to see Miss Pender the next day during his fifth period class.

When Stephen got to his scheduled appointment with Miss Pender, she instantly went over all of the alcohol-related problems Stephen had gotten into and asked him if he knew why his recent alcohol-related activities caused quite a bit of apprehension by the school administrators.

Quite candidly, Stephen was unsure why the principal explained to him that he had to see a school psychologist. As he stated to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional counselor about his drinking behavior? Because nearly all of his peers drink the same amount that he does, in essence, drinking shouldn't be such a big issue. Stated more directly, if nearly everyone is drinking, why is this such a major issue?

In short, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was starting to foil his ability to conduct himself like an accountable young man. As verbalized by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your peers drink wine coolers, wine, hard liquor, or beer does not mean that it's the correct behavior for you."

Fortunately, Miss Pender was extremely well prepared for her appointment with Stephen. She showed him research studies and reports she had highlighted that outlined diverse drinking statistics and facts that targeted most people in general. Then she showed Stephen a lot of information that applied mainly to adolescents.

After Miss Pender verbalized the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse statistics and facts, it was clear that what Miss Pender disclosed to Stephen was a real jolt to him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only made the effort to go over the short term and the long term outcomes of alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency, but she also made the effort to substantiate what she was saying with alcoholism and alcohol abuse statistics and facts that related to everyone in general, and mainly to teenagers.

Indeed, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen instantly grasped why he should not be engaging in excessive and hazardous drinking with or without his peers any longer. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the materials she discussed and then accepted her reinstatement into school.
