A Young Woman Faces Her Depression, Gets Alcohol Therapy For Her Irresponsible And Abusive Drinking, And Fortifies Her Self Worth
Emily was a forty-two-year-old accounts payable manager who was fed up with feeling depressed everyday of her life and sick of her excessive and abusive drinking behavior. Stated briefly, she missed her old motivation for doing various things she enjoyed, she hated the hangovers she went through on a regular basis, she was sick of feeling tired every morning, she was irate with herself for spending her hard-earned money on a worthless habit, and she was tired of going through broken relationship after broken relationship due to her heavy drinking.
Besides the observable alcohol-related health problems she was going through, possibly the unhealthiest part of her drinking behavior was the unreliable and devious individual she had become. In her heart she knew that she had been untruthful about her drinking behavior to her relatives, friends, and family and she also knew she had been deceitful with herself about the "positive" consequences of drinking. What is more, she justified gulping two or three alcoholic beverages before going to social activities and she also rationalized needing one or two drinks the very first thing in the morning so that she could deal with the "pressures" at her place of employment. In short, Emily got to the point in her life when she realized that she hit the bottom of the barrel in her life and was now ready to commence the slow and gradual road to health.
One of the key ways that Emily initiated her "plan" was by asking for a transfer at her place of employment. When her request was granted, she moved 800 miles away to a new part of the U.S. If nothing else, this beyond question made making new buddies and distancing herself from her old buddies simpler. Then she contacted a healthcare practitioner in her new city and made an appointment for a complete examination.
After meeting with the healthcare professional and taking a number of laboratory tests, it became apparent that Emily had made the transition from alcohol abuse to alcoholism and consequently, needed alcohol treatment and alcohol detox. At this stressful time, her physician made it a point to articulate the different alcoholic symptoms and the common symptoms of alcoholism. In addition to spending a lot of time focusing on Emily's alcoholism symptoms, the doctor also told Emily that it was concluded that she was clinically depressed and in need of therapy for her medical condition.
Due to her eagerness to follow through with the rehab program, after eight weeks of inpatient treatment, Emily was ready to start counseling on an outpatient basis. At this point in time, she started working at her new job and over a period of a few weeks began building up her body by eating nutritious foods, drinking distilled water, going to the gym, living an alcohol-free lifestyle, and taking vitamins.
After roughly nine weeks of outpatient therapy during which time she never experienced a relapse, Emily quit going to alcohol rehab and instead began going four times per week to local AA meetings. Going to these meetings helped Emily continue her alcohol-free style of life, they gave her the support she wanted, and they served as a frequent reminder of the dangerous outcomes that are associated with unhealthy and abusive drinking. Compared with her life just a few short months ago, life was now meaningful and loaded with promise that she could have never longed for or fulfilled while while she was engaged in excessive and unhealthy drinking behavior.
